The 2014/15 hockey season kicks off this weekend and continues through to the beginning of March with various banner tournaments being held around the East Kootenays. Hopefully all the banner tounaments will be in place after our next monthly meeting on Monday November 3, 2014.

The website is slowly getting updated for the year so check back to see what is new and if you have any suggestions feel free to send me an email.

The league schedule has been posted and if you find any errors let me know.

Enjoy the season!

BC Hockey AGM
Jun 23, 2014, 7:40 pm

The BC Hockey AGM was held in Penticton this past weekend. It was a great opportunity to network with other hockey associations and learn more about how BC Hockey operates. I attended with representatives from Cranbrook, Fernie and Kimberley. It is always nice to have company!

The first steps towards a new governance method were taken this weekend. We will be moving towards a smaller board with representatives being skilled based depending on what BC Hockey decides will be the focus of the association. Fortunately for us we will have strong representation on this executive this year as BC Hockey moves forward with these changes. John Gillen was re-elected as Director-at-Large and Rick Boekestyn from Cranbrook returns to the board as EK Director.

Next year the AGM will move back to Sun Peaks Resort on June 12-14, 2015. If you talk to anyone who has attended previous AGMs everyone says it is a great experience and a wonderful opportunity to talk with the powers that be in BC Hockey.

One final note, for the upcoming 2014/15 season the EK Board will have Wallace Ross as president, Chris Prosser from Invermere as Vice-president and Leann Smith as Secretary-treasurer.

Enjoy your summer!

EKMHA League and Playoff Policy (2013)

The East Kootenay Minor Hockey Association (EKMHA) has established a league system in order to promote the game of hockey within the association. While it is understood that many teams play in a number of tournaments inside and outside the association, the priority of all teams must be to compete in the EKMHA leagues. This policy clarifies current bylaws (14 and 16) and lays out a policy for the league playoffs.

EK League

The EKMHA League season runs from November 1 of the current year through to the Monday of the Alberta Family Day weekend.

If tiering is needed to ensure a balanced league these tournaments can be held throughout the month of October, except in the last weekend of the month. The last Sunday in the month of October is reserved for a scheduling meeting. The meeting will be arranged by the EKMHA board.

Not only should available ice times be brought to the scheduling meeting but each association should attempt to book ice time for a league championship tournament. As described below.

Once the league schedule has been set, it will be posted on the EKMHA website. Any changes to the set schedule must be approved by the President of the EKMHA. Any team not wishing to participate in the league championships must notify the President of the EKMHA on or before December 31 of the current season. League championship sites will be approved no later than January 1 of the current season.

The manager of the home team is required to send the score of any home games played on the weekend to the EKMHA President within 48 hours of the completion of the game. Failure to provide the score may result in a $20 fine (at the discretion of the president). This is in addition to sending any game sheets which may require the attention of the president. This will allow the standings to be updated quickly, especially near the end of the season when games may affect playoff seeding.

Championship series for the EKMHA League will begin the weekend after the Alberta Family Day Weekend and can potentially run through to the last weekend in March prior to the start of Springbreak. Earlier championship weekends can be approved by the President if it does not cause undue financial hardships on teams. Championship weekends will not be approved in any Resort Communities (Elk Valley, Windermere Valley, etc.) on long weekends through the winter.

All championship weekend schedules must be approved by the President of the EKMHA. Seeding for these tournaments will be based on the league standings, however changes which could reduce tournament costs for teams travelling to the championships may also be considered. Playoff formats are found on the EKMHA website.

Costs for these championship tournaments are to be shared equally amongst the participating teams.

Wecome to the 2013/14 Season
Sep 4, 2013, 7:42 pm

Things are warming up for the 2013/14 hockey season. Regisration should be mostly finished and plans should be laid for the teams competing in the various leagues around the EK, and the kids should be dusting off their brains and hockey equipment. This season we will see the introduction of no bodychecking in Peewee and below. The coach co-ordinator and referee in chief have begun the process of setting up clinics for this season. Check the BC Hockey website for details. Better yet follow BC Hockey on Facebook.

We are still looking for a District Director for the East Kootenays. Until we find someone our interests at BC Hockey will be looked after by June McKenzie in the West Kootenays.

If you know of anyone who may like to take on this job please forward their name and contact information to me and I will talk to them. I also have a job description I can send out.

I will be trying to put more info on the calendar this year so check back often.

Everyone have a great season!

BC Hockey AGM Sun Peaks Resort
Jun 9, 2013, 10:09 pm

This weekend the BC Hockey AGM was held at the Sun Peaks Resort just outside of Kamloops. There was a lot of great information provided and ample opportunity to meet other members from all districts. On of the highlights was the election of John Gillen as Director at Large. John has been the distrct director for the EK for 6 years. He will now be expected to take on a larger role in BC Hockey. Unfortunately we now need to find a District Director for the EK. If you know of anyone who might be interested please get in touch with me.

It is interesting to note that we share many concerns but the scale is different in other parts of the province. I hope that in the coming season all of the associations from our district will consider sending a member to the next AGM which will be held in Penticton next June. BC Hockey will be making funds available from a small windfall so that all associations will have the opportunity to have one member subsidized to attend.
